Dad was a very bright and self-absorbed man who was generous with his thoughts. Some might say over-generous! His wasn’t a life un-examined. Quite the opposite, perhaps a life most examined.

Twenty years ago, we were together on a long road trip crossing Nebraska. It was a bright and warm afternoon in early October. I was driving and he was sipping vodka from his flask and gazing out the window, just enjoying the scenery wash over him.

Sometimes after a drink or two he spoke as if there were a biographer present. “Son, I think it comes down to this: There is no good. There is no bad. There are no truths. Our perceptions and experiences “here” may be an illusion. Any “here-after” is certainly an illusion. We simply “are” and then “are not”. If there is any meaning - it’s in loving one another.”

Dad, you “were”, and now “are not”. You were greatly loved, and you will be greatly missed.

-Doug
