Muriel Weigel Obituary

Muriel Newell Weigel, age 85, passed away on December 13, 2020. She was born on February 20, 1935 and grew up in Oak Park, Illinois.

She was a long time resident of Glen Ellyn. Muriel was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Robert and Myrtle Newell. She is survived by her ex husband, Ray Weigel, of Wheaton, and her four children. Gary (Linda) Weigel of Aurora, Susan Scott of Villa Park, Holly (Jason) Fels of Geneva, and Amy (Chris) Olcott of Geneva. She is a loving grandmother to ten: Ryan Scott, Kevin Scott, Timothy (Nico Norena) Scott, Megan Scott, Braden Fels, Jack Fels, Kaitlyn Fels, Amanda Olcott, Ashley Olcott, and Chase Olcott. She remained close with her ex-son in law Matt Scott.

Muriel graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School in 1953, and attended Lake Forest College where she then met and later married Ray Weigel in 1956. They moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan where she worked as a receptionist in a doctor’s office. Upon moving back to Glen Ellyn, Muriel was a full time homemaker. She was active at Faith Lutheran Church where she served on altar guild and was a long time member of a women’s circle group. Muriel volunteered her time at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield for several years. Her family meant everything to her, and she was always available and willing to help with her children and grandchildren. She attended their various functions and enjoyed being a grandma. Muriel was proud of her Norwegian heritage and even had the opportunity to visit family in Norway. She was a devoted music lover, having studied cello, piano, and organ which helped her to become quite an accomplished musician.  She summered at Interlochen Music Academy in Michigan as a high school student. Even in her later years, Muriel was able to play many songs by ear. Dogs held a very special place in her heart. She had many throughout her life, and had a soft spot for Boston Terriers.
