Jan-Ann Turner Detmer Obituary

Jan-Ann Turner Detmer, age 89, died peacefully on February 25, 2021.Jan-Ann was the middle of three sisters born in Florida (as she was proud to point out) to James Allen and Grace-Mary Turner on February 17,1932.

After meeting her future husband at a charity gala, she married the love of her life Martin J. Detmer in 1951, and together had five children. A 1950 graduate of Highland Park, IL High School, Jan-Ann was a member of the DAR and the Colonial Dames. She founded the Glen Ellyn Auxiliary Chapter of the then Chicago Rehabilitation Institute. Jan-Ann served locally as member of the Glenbard West Boosters Club, and the Glen Ellyn Book Club. She was a past member of Chicago Golf Club. She was a current member of Glen Oak Country Club and the Glen Ellyn Women’s Club both of which brought her great joy. She loved her community “Glen Ellyn U.S.A.” Jan-Ann’s family and friends were her career and a source of unabashed pride. By any stretch she was enormously successful. She leaves a generation that will miss their Mom terribly, a generation that will miss Gram and another generation that will miss Gi-Gi. She was a cross generational wonder. Her real friends ranged in age from 106 on down and she informally counseled many of her contemporaries and “youngsters” alike. She enjoyed reminiscing about the past. Her memories sustained her. “Let’s talk happy stories” she would say and stories would flow.

Jan-Ann is survived by her four children: daughter, Mary Detmer Goodspeed and sons, James (Katherine), Martin J Detmer Jr. and David (Jean). There are also 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.Her husband, Martin J. Detmer, daughter, Ann, granddaughter, Maeve, son-in-law, Norwick Goodspeed and daughter-in-law, Julie Evans Detmer, predeceased her.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Petronille in Glen Ellyn on Saturday March 6,2021 at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bridge Communities, 505 Crescent Blvd., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137.
