William G. Scanlan

William G. "Bill" Scanlan of Wheaton, Ill. died peacefully Nov. 15, 2016, in Winfield, Ill.

He was born, Nov. 3, 1928 in Yonkers N.Y., to William G. and Marian Brennan Scanlan. He spent his childhood and youth in Freeport, Long Island.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Phyllis (nee Gerhold); daughters, Susan (Steven) Krenek, Diane Gallian, son Eric (wife Dawn) Scanlan. He was the proud grandfather of Zachary and Brendan Scanlan; stepdaughters, Monique and Kylee Hamon, Megan Allen. He had one sister, Patricia Chapek (deceased), two nieces, Leigh Ann Tanko and Patricia McCoy and two nephews, Henry and Billy Chapek.

Bill graduated in 1951 from the University of Virginia with a B.S. in Commerce. His graduate studies were at The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He served two years in the Coast Guard at Woods Hole, Mass.

Bill was the founder of Universal, Inc., a janitorial and maintenance supply company. He and his family had been residents of Glen Ellyn for 45 years, before moving to Wheaton two years ago.

Bill enjoyed traveling, reading, fishing with his son and watching Blackhawks games and English mysteries. His greatest joy in life was his family. Bill's gift to all who knew him was his wit and his marvelous sense of humor.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northern Illinois Food Bank, Geneva, Ill., or the Garfield Farm Museum, Lafox, Ill.

A memorial service will be held, Sat., Dec. 3, in the Wyndemere Retirement Center auditorium, 220 Wyndemere Circle at 3:00 p.m. Arrangements handled by Leonard Memorial Funeral Home, Glen Ellyn, IL. For information call 630-469-0032.
