I received this news through the Notre Dame grapevine. I'm not a Facebook participant. I was/am good friends with Dave's sister Julie... we were '90 grads but we lost touch. Through her I got to know her brother Dave as he graduated before us and moved to the city [Chicago] to a noisy little apartment near Kelly's Pub where the L trains rumbled by frequently like a scene out of the Blues Brothers. I got to visit that apartment many times and got to truly experience one of the most vivacious, generous, and welcoming individuals I have ever met in my life. I remember that Dave drove us [Paul, Julie, not sure Maggie] up to see REM play at Alpine Valley..and wow what a hoot that was. One the way back, Dave played a song that I wrote about a dozen times...that was a hoot too!!! Man, I hate getting news like this feeling like I should have never lost touch with the Kostolanky's ...what a great family. My condolences to your family. When I look at this smiling photo of Dave... I have the immediate reaction "sure I will get us both another".... Just like the good ol'times. Dave, I will miss you. You have a wonderful family and they will miss you dearly. You have beautiful and talented kids. Again, I will miss you...love you buddy. "Your memories are peculiar things.... there always there..."

Julie, Paul, Maggie, & Parents...Peace.

I just met Dave a few years ago at Men's Frat at GEBC. We sat at a table together and quickly connected and become friends. He was such an inspiring and positive soul. Always with a subtle smile on his face and a kind word on his lips. Even while he was sick, he always asked how things were going in my life...and quick with a word of encouragement and strength.

I am so sad by the man that this world is losing, but am so thankful for how he touched so many people in the such a short time. I believe God uses certain people to do his work of loving, inspiring, caring for and showing compassion for his people...Dave was definitely one of those people. His impact will live on for a very long time

My heartfelt sympathies to his family and friends

I'm so sorry. David came from a great family and looks like he created another great family. Of the people I've lost touch with since graduating from ND, the entire Kostolansky family has always been at the top of my list of those I have missed most. Getting this news just now from another former classmate and I'm just in shock and crushed. Sounds like a life well lived and great role model for his children. Love and prayers for you all. - Buck
