Robert Stein Obituary

Bob was born May 14, 1928, in Chicago to A. Edward and Eugenia Stein.  They moved to Park Ridge in 1932, where he attended grade school, junior high and Maine High School (followed several years later by Harrison Ford and Hilary Clinton).  Bob was in high school during the war, and became an Eagle Scout.  He attended Forestry school at the University of Michigan, earning bachelors and masters degrees with honors.

Bob worked for Commonwealth Edison for more than 36 years, contracting with companies which maintained all of the outdoor work, including tree trimming around wires, wood pole inspection and painting large steel towers.  He bought his family’s summer cottage on Berry Lake in Wisconsin from his dad in 1963.  After enlarging and remodeling, it became the center point for decades of fun and relaxation for many family and friends that continues to this day.  Bob was fond of traditional jazz, the Bears, the Chicago & Northwestern railroad, and especially doing maintenance work at his church. He also enjoyed playing 16” softball, volleyball, dart baseball and fishing for bass.  He loved to make up and tell jokes.

He met and married Dorothy Marie Dahl (also from Park Ridge) in 1954.  He raised three daughters in Glen Ellyn, Illinois:  Virginia Stein, Mia (Bill) Stein-Kodzik and Carol Asselmeier.  He was proud of his grandchildren:  Becky (Nick) Nelson and great granddaughters Abby and Lilly, Carrie and Charlie Asselmeier, and Sam Kodzik.

A New Orleans jazz funeral will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 493 Forest Ave., Glen Ellyn on Thursday, July 15. Viewing will begin at 10 am, service at 11 am, immediately followed by internment at Forest Hills Cemetery in Glen Ellyn.  If you wish, memorials to Spectrios Institute for Low Vision in Wheaton, Illinois (www.spectrios.org) or Grace Lutheran Church (www.graceglenellyn.org) would be appreciated.
