Mary Ellen Witkus, a beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished community member, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. Her unwavering support and boundless love for her children—J.C., Chris, Paul, Phil, and Joan—were the cornerstones of her life. Mary Ellen's devotion extended to her cherished grandchildren: Kevin, Kyle, John, Joe, Ryan, Johnny, and Brianna, each of whom held a special place in her heart. She was also a loving mother-in-law to Rich and Kim, who were deeply touched by her kindness and generosity.
Mary Ellen dedicated over 35 years of her life to Glenbard District 87, where she was fondly known as the "attendance lady" at Glenbard West. Her kindness and warmth touched the lives of countless students. She brought joy and laughter to the halls, especially around Halloween, when she would transform into the Wicked Witch of West, a character far removed from her true, loving nature. She was also a founding member of the AFSCME Union in the school district, serving as vice president for many years, advocating tirelessly for her colleagues and the betterment of the workplace.
Her family meant everything to her. She married the love of her life, John Witkus, on October 27, 1956, and they shared a beautiful journey together until his passing in April of 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband John, and her sons Joseph, Paul, and Phil.
Mary Ellen was fierce, funny, and a masterful storyteller. Her home was a haven of care and generosity, always open to those in need. Whether it was a warm meal, a new outfit, or a bit of gas money, Mary Ellen took care of everyone she knew. Her generosity knew no bounds, and her selflessness left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Her passing leaves a tremendous void in the hearts of her family and friends, but her spirit of love, care, and laughter will continue to live on in the stories and memories she leaves behind. Mary Ellen's legacy is one of unwavering love, boundless generosity, and a life lived in service to others. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
