Kevin Carhill Obituary

Kevin Carhill, 83, of Lombard, Illinois passed away peacefully at home on Monday January 27, 2025 with his wife, Cheri Carhill, at his side on the 53rd anniversary of their wedding. He was born in Burr Oak, Kansas on June 25, 1941 to Athal and Gainer Keith Carhill, the third of five children. Kevin is survived by his sister and brother, Jill Freeman and Kipp Carhill; his wife Cheri and their four children, Avary Carhill Poza, Aubrey Carhill, Gabriel Carhill, and Hilarie Carhill; his son Kevin Carhill Jr.; and his grandchildren Valerian, Quinton, Aurelian, Maximilian, Tristan, Oliver, Vivian, Greyson, Violet, and Ivy.

Kevin proudly served in the United States Navy from 1958-1962, continuing the family tradition of military service. Working as a radio operator aboard the USS Aludra, Kevin was deployed to ports around the world with a special focus in the Asian Pacific. Following his military service, Kevin studied accounting and finance at the University of Nebraska. He built a successful career in public service with the Federal Government at the General Accounting Office (GAO) and the Office of the Auditor General of Illinois. With the GAO, he was based in Europe and was instrumental in developing an early warning system for Egypt and Israel, spearheaded the Atomic Energy Commission in Brussels and was the point person for the international division in Washington, D.C. Kevin was known for ethical and incisive findings on the job and he took great pride in the policy changes his work enabled.

Kevin was a talented and creative writer who authored a novel in addition to the well-crafted non-fiction he wrote professionally. He frequently shared remarkable stories with his children and passed his love of writing onto them, editing their articles and discussing their story ideas long into the night. Kevin lived his Catholic faith with deep conviction and had a special devotion to St. Joseph. Having traveled extensively in the early decades of his life, in his later years Kevin enjoyed time at home with his family. He was a lifelong scholar who enjoyed reading history, political economy, and science fiction. And he was always up for a competitive game of cards or chess.
