John W. Shannon Jr. of Glen Ellyn, age 89, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 21, 2023. Devoted husband of Fern (Mangan) Shannon, loving father of Johnny (JoAnn), Jimmy (Mary Catherine), Jill Weaver, Patrick (Christine), Jacqueline Shannon (Allan Margolin), Julie Brown and Jennifer Shannon; gentle grandfather of Shannon, Karly, Kaitlin, Shea, Alex, Makenna, Riley, Nikolai, Anya & Isabela; great-grandfather of Kelsay and Brandon. Uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents John Sr. & Lillian Shannon and siblings Nancy McGrane, Sally Vlach, Harry, Richard, and Tadd Shannon.
Visitation 3 pm to 7 pm on Wednesday, December 27 at Leonard Memorial Home, 565 Duane Street, Glen Ellyn, IL. Funeral Service at 10 am on Thursday, December 28 at Leonard Memorial Home and interment after at Forest Hill Cemetery, corner of St. Charles and Riford Roads, Glen Ellyn.

John was born in Chicago IL in 1934 to parents John and Lillian Shannon and was the 3rd oldest of 6 children.
John met the love his life Fern, 71 years ago and married in 1955 before they moved to Paris France while he was based in the US Army. They were excited to return to Illinois to start a family that resulted in 7 children, 10 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren and resided in Glen Ellyn most of their married life.
John was a Self Employed Insulation Contractor in the Glen Ellyn/Dupage County area for most of his career where he retired at the age of 71. He always remained involved in various community activities including an Usher at St. James the Apostle church in Glen Ellyn where his children attended grammar school, a volunteer at local Assisted Living Communities to assist the elderly, and always tried to help the homeless.
John will always be remembered for his love for his family, sense of humor, love of coffee, his friendly smile, gentle heart, desire for world peace, his love for animals and his grand puppies. He was an incredibly kindhearted man who was known to give unconditional aide to those in need.
