John Fischer Obituary

John Martin Fischer, 79, of Bloomingdale, IL, passed peacefully at home surrounded by love on January 21st. John was born in Milwaukee, WI, and lived in several states throughout his childhood, eventually settling in Elmhurst, IL. He attended and graduated HS from Immaculate Conception in Elmhurst, and later went on to attend Wright Junior College. After college he enlisted in the Army, and proudly served from 1963-1966, spending a good amount of time in Germany. He always had fond memories of his travels around Europe when he was on leave, and over the years he shared many stories of his time there. After receiving an Honorable Discharge, John returned to Elmhurst and began what would be a 40 year career at the Elmhurst Post Office as a Letter Carrier. That same year he met Kathleen Warner, who would become his loving wife in 1968. They shared a beautiful life together for 48 years until Kathy's passing in 2016. They were a loving couple, meant to be together like "peas and carrots", devoted to each other and their family.
John always had a love of nature and animals. He truly enjoyed working outside, and relished his interactions with everyone (and every friendly dog!) on his mail route. He retired in 2006, and filled his free time visiting the Morton Arboretum, Cantigny War Museum, and by volunteering for DuPage PADS, who provide emergency shelter for the homeless; and the People’s Resource Center, where he was a vital member of their Food Pantry team. He was a long time usher at St. Matthew's Church, and was always quick to help wherever he was needed. He was a 50 Year Member of NALC Branch 825, and always remained a proud member of his union. Retirement also afforded him more time to watch his beloved Chicago Cubs. He was a true diehard fan who stuck with them through thick and thin, and delighted in seeing “those meatheads” finally win the World Series.
John was a true gentle giant. He had the biggest heart, knew only kindness, and loved nothing more than to help others. Anyone who was fortunate enough to know him will always miss his pure, kind soul.

John is survived by his children Margaret, David, and Timothy (Jennifer), his grandchildren Allison and Emily, his brother Robert, his cousins, and several adoring nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years, Kathleen (2016), his parents Bert and Dorothy, and his brother Mark (in childhood).

Visitation will be held January 27th from 3-9PM at Leonard Memorial Funeral Home, 565 Duane Street, Glen Ellyn, IL. A funeral mass will be held January 28th at 10AM at St. Matthew Church, 555 Glen Ellyn Rd, Glendale Heights with interment to follow at St. Michael Cemetery in Wheaton.
