Joan Lorraine Nix of Glen Ellyn, age 91, died peacefully of natural causes at home on August 8, 2024 with her family by her side.
Joan is the beloved mother of Shelley (Dierking-Nix) Hovde of Glen Ellyn and Lindsey (Eric Probst) Nix of Port Wash, WI. Dear grandmother of Peter Lill-Hovde, Mike Hovde, Jon Hovde & Joe Probst and dear great-grandmother of Jordan & Aaron Hovde and Heather Morgan. She is also survived by her nieces Allison (Richert) Stasiak & Susan (Richert) McAdams; her uncle Tom (Jan) Hill & Aunt Ludy (Hill) Tross; and extended family & friends.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband George J. Nix and they were married for 60 years until he passed in 2018. They bought their home in Glen Ellyn in 1959.
She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Mike Hovde (2023); parents Dee & retired Glen Ellyn Police Chief Jim Hill; her Uncle John (Janet) Richert; Grandmother Elizabeth (Bargmann) Shoppe/Richert; and her mother-in-law Jessie (Grant) Nix.
Joan was born on September 28, 1932 in Tom's River in NJ. She attended schools there and then moved to Glen Ellyn in 1948. She is a graduate of Glenbard High School, Class of 1950. She then worked as a secretary for a publishing company in Chicago and enjoyed traveling to the city.
Joan was a stay-at-home mom raising her two daughters. "Our parents were also a big part of their grandchildren's life." She was involved in the first Women's Auxiliary Volunteer Program at Central DuPage Hospital; first as a messenger & later as a receptionist for the emergency room. She also enjoyed being a co-leader of Abraham Lincoln Brownie & Girl Scout Troop #38.
Joan will be terribly missed by her family & friends. You are loved!
A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2024 from 3 PM until time of service at 7 PM at Leonard Memorial Home, 565 Duane Street, Glen Ellyn.
