David E. Cassin

October 20, 1937 ~ August 6, 2023 (age 85) 85 Years Old

David Edward Cassin, age 85, born in Oak Park, IL, current resident of Glen Ellyn, IL, passed away peacefully at home the morning of Sunday, August 6, 2023. In his final days, he was surrounded by love and his caring family and friends.

Dave was the youngest of four children (William Cassin, Phyllis Donahoe, and Patricia Graft) born to his parents, William and Cecelia Ruth Cassin. Dave loved the bond he had with his siblings and enjoyed being an uncle to 17 nieces and nephews.

He had fond memories from his school days at Ascension Grammar School (’51), St. Mel High School (’55) – where his basketball team won the Chicago City Championship, and then went on to play basketball at St. Joseph’s College (’59) in Rensselaer, IN, graduating with a BS in Marketing.  Deciding to follow in his father’s footsteps by pursuing a career in business, Dave attended New York University where he earned a MA in Retailing and Merchandising (’60).

Dave began his career at Marshall Field & Co., which was thankfully interrupted by six months of active duty in the United States Army.  Following his discharge from active duty (P.F.C), Dave rejoined Marshall Fields and at this point met Sara Chapin, whom he would go on to marry on May 21, 1966.

After two years in the city of Chicago, Dave and Sara moved to Glen Ellyn in 1969 and were blessed with three children - Mark (52), Amy (50) and Scott (49).  Dave and Sara would call Glen Ellyn home for most of their remaining time together.  Dave valued family more than anything and loved spending quality time with Sara, Mark, Amy & Scott and their dogs Lady, Muffin, and Lucy.

Dave held various positions at companies like Sears, Roebuck and Co. and McMaster-Carrbefore venturing out on his own as an entrepreneur.  Dave purchased his first business, Fredrickson’s Office Supply (Aurora, IL)and then acquiredDowner’s Grove Office Supply, Sandwich Office Supply, and Glen Ellyn Apple Computer.  Dave was active in real estate and stayed involved with the communities where his businesses and properties were located.

Dave was an avid golfer and enjoyed his weekly tee-time with good friends at the Village Links in Glen Ellyn for many years.  He later joined Glen Oak Country Club and was the proud winner of 3 Pinkie Trophies.  He enjoyed annual golf trips with his friends.  His most memorable round of golf was when he shot his age on March 28, 2015 while playing with his son, Scott.

Dave was known for his jokes du jour, million-dollar bills, and an uncanny ability to make life fun. He loved table tennis and was a professor of business management at College of DuPage for many years.

Dave and Sara began visiting Arizona in 1995 and eventually purchased a home in 1997 and would spend the winter months in Scottsdale over the next 23 years, enjoying many new adventures together and sharing their love for the desert by hosting family and friends.

Dave leaves behind a beautiful family legacy. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sara, and his children, Mark Cassin (Ellen Cassin), Amy Harbour (Rob Harbour), and Scott Cassin (Kathleen Cassin), along with sister, Patricia Graft.

He was an amazing grandfather, loved by all. Known as Granddad, he leaves behind fond memories for Will Cassin (Mark), Ella Harbour (Amy), Lauren Cassin (Mark), Ben Harbour (Amy), Will Banfield (Scott), and Cate Cassin (Mark).
