Catherine (Katie) Capps passed away on September 1, 2025, having enjoyed 96 extraordinary years. She was born November 27, 1928 in Chicago to Stamatiki and Anthony Antonopoulos, both from the Peloponnese, Greece.
Katie was one of five sisters, with whom she shared holidays, vacations, travel and her Greek traditions. After losing her father at a young age, she was particularly close to her mother, who came to live with her and husband John in her final years.
Katie married John Capps November 23, 1949 and together raised 5 children in Chicago and Glen Ellyn. John passed away January 31, 1992.
Their front door was famously never locked, the coffee was always on, and all were welcome. Their home was bursting with activity; sports, music, neighborhood children, extended family, friends, and friends of friends. She was a second mother to many over the years, and in her last days, there was a parade of those who loved her who came to thank her.
Katie lived for over 50 years in the Glen Ellyn/Glendale Heights area and loved her home towns. Her spiritual home was the Glen Ellyn Bible Church from 1959 until her passing, where her faith was nurtured and honored.
She became quite the traveler in her later years, and always had a suitcase at the ready for when she got the call from one of her sisters or children. She counted Canada, Spain, France, Switzerland, Hungary, Iceland, Saudi Arabia, India, Kashmir, Russia, Dubai, Jordan and, of course, Greece, among her many destinations.
One of Katie’s favorite acts of kindness were homemade meals stemming from her mother’s Greek traditions and her husband’s southern traditions. Her kitchen table was a hangout for many a party, reunion, celebration, or just an evening at the Capps house.
Katie was cared for in her final days by our beloved family friend Barbara Duffy. She is survived by her five devoted children; Tony, Bill, Peter (Julie), Chris (Jackie), and Matina (Sean); loving grandchildren Charlie, Spencer and Alex, of whom she was so proud, her adoring first cousin Stacey, nieces and nephews, and a host of family members, neighbors and friends.
A visitation for Katie will be held at Glen Ellyn Bible Church, 501 Hillside Avenue, Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Saturday, September 6, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM, followed immediately by a memorial service. Refreshments to follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be sent to one of Katie’s favorites charities. Wayside Cross Ministries in Aurora, IL, waysidecross.org.
