Gene Ladd Montgomery, born in Brooklyn, Iowa, on January 31, 1932, passed into his Father’s arms on October 21, 2019. Gene is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elaine, and their five children: Mark (Laura), Ann (Patrick Keegan), Jane (Jay Starr), Paul (Michelle), and Joel (Katya), and his 11grandchildren (Matthew, David, Ian, Andrew, Dana, Brendan, Anastasia, Alona, Hunter, Spencer, Zachary), as well as his two sisters and a brother, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Gene was a proud graduate of his home-state school, Iowa State University, and served in ROTC and the U.S. Army upon graduation, spending much-loved time in France with his new wife.
In life, Gene was an architect, beginning his career in Sioux Falls, SD, and working for many years in Chicago. After retirement, his love of building turned to a love for woodworking, and his projects abound with family and friends. He taught his children to “do” not watch, to be kind and generous, and to maintain life-long integrity. A life-long Presbyterian, 50 years of which was serving First Presbyterian in Glen Ellyn, he lived his life guided by faith. Gene died after a short battle with leukemia, surrounded by family. Gene had been a devoted blood donor, and, in fate’s ironic twist, died of a blood disease. He would be proud to know that others choose to be blood donors.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, Oct 25, at 10:30 am at First Presbyterian Church, 550 N. Main St., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137. Memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church.
