William Holtzman

William Holtzman, 84, passed away peacefully on September 8 in Elk Grove Village, IL. He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Sandra, and sister Ruth (late David) Fischman. He is survived by his children Michael (Heather Carroll), David, Jill Leichter, Wendy (Clayton) Chinn; grandchildren Justin, Steven, Zachary (Tina), Anna and Sam Leichter, and Samantha and Eleanor Chinn, great grandchildren Jaxon and Sasha, siblings Sylvia (late Sam) Lane, and Seymour (Evie) Holtzman, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA in 1931, as a young man he helped his father, a furrier, make fur coats. He attended Wilkes College where he met Sandra, then received his engineering degree from Penn State and his PhD from the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton, Wisconsin. For many years he was Director of Research at Knowlton Brothers, in Watertown, NY where he also served on the local school board as member and president. He then taught Paper Science and Engineering at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University. Dr. Bill (as he was known) was an avid tennis player, a music lover, and a huge fan of the National Parks which he visited as often as possible. He was a fair, intelligent and generous man and a natural teacher. A memorial gathering will take place on September 11th at the Leonard Memorial Funeral Home, 565 Duane Street, Glen Ellyn, IL, visitation at 11:00 am, service at noon.
