F. Paul Mooring

F. Paul Mooring passed away Friday, Nov. 18, 2016.  Paul earned his PhD in Physics from the University of Wisconsin in 1951, and worked at Argonne National Laboratory from 1951 until 1983.  He was a Fulbright Research Fellow at the University of Helsinki 1962-63.  After his retirement in 1983, he continued his professional involvement in physics including serving as an editor for American Institute of Physics, an associate editor for Applied Physics Letters, and an editor for Applied Physics Reviews.  He continued this work until he reached the age of 92.

 

A resident of Glen Ellyn for  61 years, he did much to make the Glen Ellyn - DuPage County area a far better place to live and enjoy outdoor life.  He was a lifelong environmentalist.  He served as president of the Illinois Prairie Path, and along with his wife, Jean, dedicated countless hours to the building and maintenance of the trail.  He also served as president and as treasurer of the Illinois Audubon Society, and enthusiastically led bird walks and seasonal bird counts. 

 

He is survived by his daughters Cecily Mooring, Carol (John) Larson, and Margaret (Robert Foster) Mooring, grandchildren Elizabeth Lee, Paul Hamm, Morgan Hamm, Kelinda Larson, and Benjamin Larson, and great-grandchildren Adelynn Lee, Nathan Lee, and Derek Lee.  Paul was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Jean C. Mooring.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in his name be made to the Illinois Prairie Path, the Nature Conservancy, or the University of Wisconsin.  Arrangements handled by Leonard Memorial Funeral Home, Glen Ellyn, Illinois. For information please call 630-469-0032.
