Robert W. Growden, age 80, a 39 year resident of Glen Ellyn, IL, passed away January 9, 2013. He was born September 8, 1932 in Toledo, OH. He proudly served in the United States Merchant Marines and later became a Seargent in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. Bob graduated with a business degree from San Francisco State University. He quickly rose through the ranks at Encyclopedia Britannica, becoming their National Credit Manager in Chicago. Bob left the world of business to pursue a second career at an engineering firm where he designed, built and patented machinery. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling, especially to China, Japan and Germany. He was a very skilled model ship builder and spent many years crafting and showing his boats. In his later years he enjoyed daily walks and talking to his neighbors. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Doris Growden; three daughters Lori (Al) Krebsbach, Bridget (Jeff) Spencer and Nicole (Ray) Acre; and 7 grandsons Kyle and Kurt Krebsbach, Matthew and Justin Spencer, Jack, Joe and Tyler Acre. A private memorial will be held at a later date.
